The Town Square and the Public Toilet

Writing on Slashdot, Sunburnt made a point on free speech versus anonymity far more eloquently than I could hope to:

Except that isn’t what you’ve created … There is no anonymity in the town square: people speaking their “brilliant or foolish” (or slanderous and defamatory) thoughts are identifiable, and the repercussions for their actions can range from social disapproval to legal sanction. Blanket anonymity [is the] opposite environment from that of the town square. What Mr. Cohen has created rather resembles a public toilet.
